ham radio license testing

Getting Licensed in Amateur Radio

Getting your ham radio license is the first step in an exciting and fun-filled journey that enriches your life in many ways. Before you can get on the air, you need to be licensed and know the rules to operate legally. In the USA there are three license classes—Technician, General and Extra.

You can visit https://www.arrl.org/getting-licensed to read more about this, and for additional details on licensing and testing for Amateur Radio, you can refer to https://www.arrl.org/licensing-education-training

Ham Radio License Testing with BARC

The Broward Amateur Radio Club offers testing for all license classes as part of our monthly meetings, normally on the 1st Saturday of each month. Upcoming dates are on the Events page.

Testing is held at:

West Broward Regional Library

Conference Room on the 2nd Floor

8601 W Broward Blvd,

Plantation, FL 33324

If you plan to test with us, please pre-register and let us know when you wish to take your test.

If you have your FRN number, please enter it in our signup form below.

Walk -ins are welcome.

To "pre-register" you can email us at browardarc@outlook.com with your name, license class for the test you wish to take, and the date you plan to show up. Any questions are also welcome.

What do I need to bring?

On the day of your exam session, you will have to bring the following:

  • A valid, state-issued Photo ID.
  • A copy of your FRN number.
  • If you already have a ham radio license, bring a copy of your license.

Getting an FRN number

If this is your first Amateur Radio license, you will need to register and establish a user name in the FCC CORES system. This will allow you to request an FCC Registration Number (FRN).  After creating and activating your FCC CORES username, you can file for an FRN.

For information on registering with FCC Cores, you can refer to https://www.arrl.org/fcc-cores-registration-instructions

Access CORES from the FCC Registration & Login page at https://apps.fcc.gov/cores

If you have any questions on registering with FCC CORES or requesting an FRN, please contact us at browardarc@outlook.com.  We are happy to assist wit any questions you may have.
